Getting started
What is Love & Butter?
Love & Butter is your personal cooking home. It keeps your recipes in one place, builds your grocery lists, helps you plan meals, and quietly tracks everything you cook over time.
The idea is simple: we handle the planning and organising, so the only thing you have to think about is the cooking.
I'm new here — where do I start?
Three quick steps. First, create your account. Next, add your first recipe — type it in yourself or import it from a link or PDF (see “How do I add a recipe?” below). Finally, set your preferences so recipes and ingredient swaps match how you like to eat.
From then on, everything you add lives in one place and is tailored to you.
Can I use Love & Butter on my phone?
Yes. Love & Butter works in the web browser on your phone, tablet, or computer — just open the site and cook right from the screen, no app to install.
The pages you reach for mid-cook, like your grocery list and your saved recipes, even keep working if your kitchen Wi-Fi drops out.
Recipes & substitutions
How do I add a recipe?
Go to My Recipes and use one of the two buttons at the top. “New Recipe” opens a blank form where you type in your own ingredients and steps. “Import” lets you paste a link and have the recipe pulled in for you — it works with recipe websites and with TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube videos, and you can also upload a PDF or paste in plain text.
However you start, you can review and edit everything before you save.
What does the swap icon next to an ingredient mean?
It means we know a substitution for that ingredient. On a recipe, look for the small ↺ swap icon beside an ingredient (hover and it reads “Substitution available”).
Tap it and we'll swap in an alternative — the amount is already adjusted to your recipe, with a short note on how the swap affects the taste or texture. Tap it again to switch back to the original.
How are substitution amounts worked out?
Automatically, for your recipe's serving size. When you pick a swap, we recalculate the quantity for you — for example, 1 tbsp of honey becomes about 1¼ tbsp of maple syrup — and flag any change in taste or texture so there are no surprises.
Can a recipe build on another recipe?
Yes. If a recipe needs something you make separately — a sauce, a dough, a syrup — it can link to that other recipe as a “prerequisite.”
Those ingredients are pulled into the main recipe automatically and labelled so you can see they come from the linked recipe, and you can jump straight to it.
Can I read a recipe in another language?
Often, yes. On a recipe, tap the globe icon and choose your language under “Show this recipe in.” You can switch between the original and the translation whenever you like. Right now we support English and Arabic.
Groceries
How do I build a grocery list?
Open a recipe and tap “Add to groceries,” and its ingredients drop into your list — you'll find it under “Groceries” in the menu. Add as many recipes as you like; we automatically combine the same ingredient across recipes so you don't buy it twice.
Planning a whole week? The Meal Planner can send everything to your grocery list at once.
Can I take my grocery list to the store?
Yes — on the Groceries page, tap “Export PDF.” You get a clean, printable list grouped by aisle (produce, dairy, and so on), so it follows the order you actually walk through the shop.
Experiments
What are experiments?
Experiments are how you perfect a recipe over time. Open one of your own recipes under My Recipes and turn on Experiment mode.
From there you can tweak the ingredients or steps, save the result as a new version, and jot down what you changed — all without touching the original.
How do I keep track of my different versions?
Every version you save is kept, along with your notes and the cooks you log against it. So you can look back, compare what worked against what didn't, and make your best version again next time. The original is always preserved.
Journey & community
What is my cooking journey?
It's your private cooking diary. Open “My Cooking Journey” from the menu under your photo to see everything you've cooked over time, along with the achievements you unlock as you go.
This page is just for you — no one else can see it.
Can I cook together with friends and family?
Yes. Go to “Friends” (in the menu under your photo) to find people by username and send a friend request. Once you're connected, you can share recipes with each other and follow what you're each cooking.
You're always in control of what others see: in Settings → Privacy & security you can choose Public, Friends + groups, Friends only, or fully Private.
Account & settings
How do I set my dietary preferences (allergies, diets)?
Tap your photo in the top-right, go to Settings, then Substitutions. There you can switch on a diet — like vegan, gluten-free, or keto — and add your own swaps for things you're allergic to or simply don't like.
Once set, your recipes, ingredient swaps, and grocery lists all adjust to match, automatically.
How do I change my photo or name?
Tap your photo in the top-right and go to Settings → Profile, then tap “Edit profile.” From there you can change your profile photo, display name, username, and bio whenever you like.
Is my data private?
Your recipes, notes, and cooking journey are yours, and nothing about your activity is shared until you choose to share it.
To set this, go to Settings → Privacy & security, where you decide exactly what's visible — to everyone, to friends and groups, to friends only, or to no one but you.
